A must-read for shipping lathes: Detailed explanation of three packaging methods (no packaging/pallet/triple full packaging)

In international trade, the safe and intact delivery of lathes to customers is a crucial measure of a supplier's expertise. Different shipping distances, cost budgets, equipment sizes, and risk tolerances require unique packaging strategies. As a long-established machine tool manufacturer in northern China (established in 1952) with over seventy years of experience, we leverage our strong foundry capabilities, integrated production experience, and understanding of the global supply chain to offer three proven lathe shipping packaging solutions to help you make informed decisions.

Ⅰ. Three packaging methods

1. Unpackaged Shipping

This option is only suitable for on-site pickup or very short-distance factory transfers. The equipment is shipped directly after quality inspection without any external protection. While this option offers the lowest cost, components such as precision guide rails and spindles are fully exposed, exposing them to a high risk of collision and corrosion. Important Note: This option is strictly prohibited for export orders; otherwise, the customer will be fully responsible for any damage to the goods.

2. Pallet Packaging (Economical)

Our standard pallet features a 3mm galvanized steel welded structure for loading equipment. Bolted and reinforced with steel straps, the pallets feature rubber anti-slip edges to protect the equipment from scratches. They are fumigation-free, moisture-resistant, and deformation-resistant, significantly improving safety for short-distance transport. While not fully enclosed, the steel structure can withstand the impact of typical handling, offering an optimal balance between cost and basic protection.

3. Triple Full Packaging (Flagship Protection)

Designed specifically for the export of high-value equipment, this product features a three-layer composite structure:

1)Heavy-duty base - the equipment base is locked on the galvanized steel plate welded structure bracket with high-strength bolts to resist transportation bumps;

2) Steel frame cage—A welded frame creates a rigid protective layer, effectively protecting against container impacts and accidental collisions;

3) Sealed plywood box—The outer layer is covered with waterproof sheeting to isolate moisture and dust, and the surface is clearly marked with lifting markings.

The interior is filled with cushioning material, combined with VCI vapor phase rust inhibitors and desiccant, forming a comprehensive protection system. Although this solution is the most expensive, it can reduce the ocean cargo damage rate to below 1%, significantly reducing hidden risk costs.

Ⅱ. How to choose wisely?

1. Transportation Distance and Complexity: The longer the distance, the more transit points, and the more complex the environment (e.g., humid sea transportation), the more demanding a high-level protection solution (triple packaging) is.

2. Equipment Value and Precision: The higher the value of the equipment and the more stringent the precision requirements, the more investment is needed in top-tier protection.

3. Customer Contract Requirements: Strictly adhere to customer-specified packaging standards.

4. Cost-Risk Balancing: Don't just focus on the initial packaging cost. Calculate the combined losses from potential damage, delays, and decreased customer satisfaction. "Triple packaging" is often the most cost-effective option for export operations.

Note: Extra-long/special-shaped equipment (such as a 12-meter lathe) requires special assessment.

Segmented Packaging: Extra-long containers utilize a segmented base and modular cages to ensure transport stability.

Customized Design: Support points are reinforced and cage density is adjusted to match the equipment's center of gravity.

Logistics Coordination: Container specifications (e.g., open-top container/flatbed) and port handling conditions must be confirmed in advance.

If your equipment exceeds 8 meters in length or has a special design, please contact our sales team in advance. We will customize a feasible and cost-optimized solution based on equipment drawings and transportation routes.
